LET'S SEE... Where did we leave off at my lovelies??? AH HA, we are on component 10 of the Behavior Control category of the BITE Model as described by SAH. He lists as number 10: "Rewards and punishments used to modify behaviors, both positive and negative". So here we have two types of reinforcement: positive and negative (all mixed in with it being either a reward or punishment.) {If you are unfamiliar with types of reinforcement, I suggest you read my earlier posts where I explain it- or do a quick google search} So what are positive reinforcers that the cult leader used to modify members behavior? What are the negative reinforcers? YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS!!!I

STORY TIME!

I think the easiest way to go about explaining my experiences within this component would be to list off a series of rewards and punishments that I have either received or witnessed someone else receiving as a means to modify group members' behavior. Let's dive in!

Rewards

• When I was in the 6th grade, I started going to Sunday school with the cult. My teacher, let's call her T, would stand up and give us lectures for an hour or more on a topic in the bible. She would give us exorbitant amounts of homework and readings to do. Once a month we would have a test to see who had retained enough of this garbage. When she would score the tests, she would stand all the kids up in front of the congregation and read off our scores, talk about how those of us that scored lower need to be prayed for. Then members of the cult would come up and pray for the children who didn't score well. I was always one of the low scoring children. I had untreated mental health issues, was in band, and kind of a deliquent, so I didn't ever study. However, this just goes to show that negative reinforcement is ineffective. On top of that, T would prioritize who got the best breakfast based on who scored well on these tests. If you scored well, she would get you McDonalds breakfast or toaster strudels. If you didn't score well, T would give you an orange or banana. Everyone in power in this cult used food as a means to modify behavior. So what behavior was T trying to modify here? T had been given the task to condition the older children to be ready to receive and not dispute doctrine being taught out in the main service. T had the job of prepping all of us for what was to come when you turn 16 (no more Sunday school).

• I was 17 when I quit marching band. Quit band all together, actually. I'd had enough of the constant torment at each service, being condemned to hell for playing in band at the school. So I caved and quit. And to my surprise, what was my reward for quitting band? I was asked to play my flute with the rest of the musicians who played for the services. Here the cult leader was rewarding my actions by allowing me to do something deemed prestigious within the cult: play for the services.

Punishments

• It was a Tuesday night service, a testimony service. One of the group members, lets call her M, she got up and testified about how she heard this song in a store about "I kissed a girl and I liked it". M went on to talk about how these "devil phones" have internet access where "our young members could be hearing this song". I had heard the song at the time; who hadn't heard the latest Katy Perry bop? Anyway the cult leader went on a whole tangent about how no one needs a phone with internet access. He took my phone that night. Even though it was only an Envy3. He didn't; however, take my iPod lol What behavior was he trying to modify by taking away my phone? Even though I was not even brought into question? He took all the young people's phones that night. I don't remember getting it back. He was trying to deter people from using their phones "inappropriately".

• This one is a little darker. I little more uhhhh more... So we were at a neighboring cults' service and our leader was speaking that night. He brought a huge container of hard boiled eggs. He went on about how only real christians will eat both the white and the yolk to signify putting on the yolk of god so he can steer you in the right direction. He passed out the eggs and told us all to eat them. I ate the white of the egg but not the yellow. I don't like the raw yellow of the egg. Only in deviled eggs or in fried eggs, not hard boiled egg yolk... ewww. He walked around the group to watch everyone eat their egg. When he got to me, he saw that I had only eaten the white of the egg. He made a scene in the group, asking why I was not willing to take on the yolk of god to be guided. I told him I didn't like the yellow part of the egg, nothing personal. My mom even spoke up and was like, "yeah, that's true..." He only saw this as a threat to his message. What punishment could he possibly come up with for not eating the yolk of an egg, well, it's worse than you may think, He took off his belt and made it in a loop to fit over my head. I fought against him, not wanting to have his belt around my neck- no telling what else he was going to do... He did eventually get the belt around my neck and stood me up. He preceded to parade me around to each and every member, letting them lay hands on me. Praying for me. Sreaming in my ears and shaking me like a doll. By the time this ended and he took the belt off my neck I had a migraine, leather rash on my neck, a few bruises, and enough brokenness and embarrassment to fuel a nuclear power plant.

These are just 4 of the milder examples I wanted too share with you. This does not include watching people be starved while fasting or drained of their monetary value because of a bad deed they had done. It's sick. Fucking sick...
